Glenelg High Mock Trial Team argues its way to district verdict


Call them lawyers, attorneys, counselors or barristers, the Mock Trial Team at Glenelg High School is a group of hard-working students who win trials. Nine young scholars act as attorneys and witnesses for the defendant or plaintiff in mock trials in real courtrooms.

Jack Mobberley of Summer Hill Farm died March 21 after a long illness.

Mr. Mobberley and his wife, Gretchen, who is president of the Howard County Horse Show Association, moved to Western Howard County in 1966, training and breeding race and show horses.

He was a member of the Howard County-Iron Bridge Hounds and served on the board of the Maryland Horse Breeders Association and the Maryland Horsemen's Assistance Fund. He also is survived by his daughter, Bird.

Nearly 300 people attended a memorial service at Union Chapel March 27.

Contributions in Mr. Mobberley's memory may be made to thThoroughbred Retirement Foundation or the Horsemen's Assistance Fund.

Hazardous wastes may be taken to the Cooksville Maintenance Shop on May 6 for disposal. Discarded household cleaners, automotive fluids, photography chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, oil-based paints, and much more will be collected if they are brought to Cooksville in clearly labeled leak-proof containers, preferably the originals. Trained personnel will remove the materials from your vehicle.

Cross-curricular instruction is important in today's schools, and one who places a big emphasis on it is Bushy Park Elementary's physical education teacher Gail Zitnay. She will turn the gymnasium into a rain forest next Monday and Tuesday. Bushy Park students will participate in a rain forest study using gymnastics stations.

At the end of the lesson, each youngster will sample tropical trail mix made of foods that grow in the rain forest.


Congratulations to Ben Toney and Carly Wilkins of Lisbon Elementary School. Ben won first place in photography and Carly won second place in visual arts in the Howard County PTA Reflections competition. Their entries were submitted for state level competition.


Linden-Linthicum United Methodist Church on Route 108 in Clarksville will hold a free Community Children's Easter Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 15 at the church. Events include an egg hunt, a puppet show, a clown performance, face painting, animal decorating, seed planting and Easter bonnet decorating. The festival will end with an Easter parade.

Need mulch for your garden? The church is having its annual mulch sale Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday evenings this month. The cost is $3 for a three cubic foot bag. Haul-your-own mulch is $20 a yard. It can be delivered for $25 for the first yard and $22.50 for each additional yard.
