Police break up bookmaking operation

Vice squad detectives broke up a large sports bookmaking operation Monday evening and arrested two Pasadena men on charges of taking bets on the NCAA basketball tournament, county police said.

David John Orcutt, 31, of the 300 block of Hickory Nut Court and Clayton Belcher, 37, of the 7700 block of Notley Road were charged with keeping a place for the purpose of gambling and making a pool of results of professional and college basketball, police said.

Both men were arrested at their homes around 7:15 p.m. when police served gambling warrants on them. Vice detectives said they recovered documents that recorded bets on college and professional basketball games.

Police acted on an anonymous tip to start an investigation in late December. Detectives believe the arrests end a large gambling organization. Police have not yet determined how much money was involved in the operation.
