Free concert Monday night at Wilde Lake High


A "Salute to Music Education," the theme of a free evening concert, will be held Monday at Wilde Lake High School at River Hill.

Performing will be the Howard County Gifted & Talented Elementary School Orchestra, the Patapsco Middle School Chorus, the Wilde Lake High School Percussion and Brass Ensembles and the Wilde Lake Beauty and Barber Shop Quartets.

The event will feature the presentation of the first annual Music Educator of the Year Award offered by the Howard County Parents for School Music.

Relevant to the recent number of tragedies and near-tragedies involving Columbia teens is a Spotlight on Health lecture being offered by Howard County General Hospital.

The program, called "Risky Behavior Among Teens," will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday in the Health Education Center, Suite L-9, of the Columbia Medical Center Building, next to the hospital at 11055 Little Patuxent Parkway.

Dr. Richard Bacharach, a staff psychiatrist at HCGH, will discuss solutions for the "it won't happen to me" attitude that often contributes to risky behavior by teens.

This lecture is a must for all parents whose children are beginning to drive, may be sexually active or perhaps contemplating experimenting with drugs or alcohol.

Congratulations to Danielle Stein, a junior at Atholton High School.

She is one of 350 high school journalists selected nationwide to attend the Washington Journalism Conference sponsored by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council.

The conference will be held April 18-23 in Washington.


The St. John Lutheran Church welcomes the public to a fellowship supper at 6:30 tonight at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center.

After the supper there will be a worship service that will include dramatic readings from "Screwtape Letters," C. S. Lewis' religious diatribe on the reality of Satan.

Featured will be the letter "When Every Trace Has Vanished."

Wilde Lake Middle School will hold an auction at 6:30 p.m. Friday. A variety of goods and services will be auctioned off in both live and silent auctions.

Columbia's senior citizens may want to mark Saturday, April 29, on their calendars. That is the date of a free seminar on how senior citizens can cope with rising crime problems in our community.

The seminar, which runs from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Linden Hall in Dorsey's Search Village Center, is presented by Sharon Sirkis.
