An Ellicott City man tried to put out a fire in his home yesterday morning, but the heat forced him to flee with his family and wait for firefighters outside, Howard County firefighters said.
John Reichenbach, 50, his wife and two children, ages 10 and 9, were not injured in the 5:40 a.m. fire. The fire caused $150,000 in damage, fire officials said.
The fire in the 2900 block of Pebble Beach Drive was concentrated in the house's attic, family room and an upstairs bedroom, fire officials said. It was under control within an hour.
The state fire marshal's office is investigating the fire.
Friend's car overturns, man is badly hurt
A 25-year-old Columbia man injured when a friend's car left the road and flipped over several times in Ellicott City Friday night was listed in serious but stable condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center yesterday, hospital officials said.
Donald William Kilroy of the 9400 block of Battler Court in Columbia's Oakland Mills Village, and the driver, Erik Storey Christy, 23, of Catonsville, were not wearing seat belts, Howard County police said.
Mr. Christy was treated and released at Howard County General Hospital. Police said speeding contributed to the collision and that charges were pending.
According to police, Mr. Christy was driving the 1991 Ford Mustang north on U.S. 29 when he switched to the far-right lane and lost control of the car about 10:30 p.m. The car rolled down an embankment just north of St. John's Lane.
Both men were thrown from the vehicle, police said.
