Tins that held products hold collectors' attention

Q: I have a collection of tins including those that held spices, tea, coffee, lard, biscuits and so forth. Do you know of a book I can purchase which describes, lists, and prices such items?

A: A new book that pictures and describes tins, with their prices, is "Antique Tins -- Identification & Values" by Fred Dodge. It is available for $26.95 from Ace Enterprises, P.O. Box 59354, Chicago, Ill. 60659.

Q: I have inherited a Singer sewing machine figural music box made to commemorate Singer's 100th (1851-1951) anniversary. I understand there were only 75 such pieces made. How can I find out its history and value?

A: Write the Singer Dealer Museum, 3400 Park Blvd., Oakland, Calif. 94610; enclose a photo of the piece and a self-addressed stamped envelope; or phone (510) 261-0413. Musical sewing machines are pictured in color and priced in "Toy and Miniature Sewing Machines -- An Identification & Value Guide" by Glenda Thomas.

Send questions to Anita Gold, P.O. Box 59354, Chicago, Ill. 60659. Enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Not all letters can be answered.
