Irving Shulman, 81, who captured a generation's angst and desolation in his screenplay for "Rebel Without a Cause," died of Alzheimer's disease March 23 in Los Angeles. His 1955 script for "Rebel," based on his novel "Children of the Dark," helped make actor James Dean a cult idol. He helped launch Tony Curtis' acting career as well with the 1949 script "City Across the River," based on his novel "The Amboy Dukes." He also wrote the book companion to "West Side Story."
