Jean and John Settino of Sun Valley

The Volunteers: Jean and John Settino, longtime residents of Sun Valley, are volunteers for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Debra Klipsch Memorial Walk-Relay.

The couple have lived in the area for over 35 years, raising three children. Mr. Settino is retired from the Department of Defense.

The couple also tutor students in math at Freetown Elementary School.

Shirley Murphy, a friend and walk volunteer, writes that the Settinos are a "great pair of people. . . . They've been active with this particular event for a couple of years. They are absolutely amazing."

Mrs. Settino's comments: "This is the one thing we really always get into. You've got to stay involved a little bit. It was fantastic last year -- we made $35,000.

"It's been getting bigger and bigger each year. Each time you reach out a little further to get more people involved.

"[John] does the silent auction, and I go out and beat the path and try to get the prizes and sponsors. It's an overall group effort that puts this together.

"It's something you do once a year and you get enthused. Somebody says, 'Will you help?' and you help.

"Stores can donate items for the silent auction." About the event: The walk-relay will be held at the Glen Burnie High School track beginning with registration at 11:30 a.m. May 21. Walking begins at 1 p.m.

The school is at 7550 Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd.

Information: Walkers and sponsors can receive pledge sheets or more information by contacting the Cystic Fibrosis office at 771-9000.
