Man tries to steal cigarettes from store


A man slipped into a rear storage room of a Severn convenience store early Thursday and tried to make off with about 37 cartons of cigarettes worth $743.70 while the manager and another employee were in the front of the store, county police said.

Nasir Ahnad Chaudhry, another employee at the 7-11 in the 2600 block of Odenton Road, apparently interrupted the incident when he arrived for work shortly before 6 a.m. Mr. Chaudhry noticed a door to the rear office and storage area open and heard noises in the bathroom.

When Mr. Chaudhry went to check, he saw a man leaving and tried to lock him behind a hallway door, while he called police.

The man tried to escape through the back door but, when he couldn't, forced his way through the hallway door and left through the front door, heading west.

Police found several cartons of cigarettes the man left behind in a large brown plastic bag that was lying on the floor.

Air conditioner stolen in burglary

Someone broke into a Pasadena woman's home Thursday morning and stole an air conditioner valued at about $300,

county police said.

Lorraine Edythe Lovill of the 100 block of Winston Road told police the burglar entered through a bedroom window between 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Mrs. Lovill found a bedspread in disarray, a small fan knocked over, a clothing rack moved and a blanket kept on top of the air conditioner lying on the floor.

Police believe the robber or robbers left the home through the front door because it was unlocked, but Mrs. Lovill, 37, said she could have left the door unlocked.

Police dog tracks suspect to woods

Bubba the police dog tracked down a suspect in the theft of a fishing reel Thursday morning from the Sears, Roebuck and Co. store in the 6600 block of Ritchie Highway, county police said.

Store security guards told police they saw a man take the reel about 10:20 a.m. and leave without paying for it. When a guard tried to stop the man, he struck the guard several times and fled with the guard in pursuit.

Police said the guard lost sight of the man as he ran into thick woods near Cromwell Fountain Condominiums.

Police said Bubba led them to a man hiding in the woods.

Kenneth M. Lucas, of no fixed address, was arrested on shoplifting charges.

Woman punched in parking lot attack

A 55-year-old Delaware woman hung onto her purse when she was attacked Thursday in the parking lot of a Safeway store in the first block of Mayo Road, but was punched in the face by her assailant, county police said.

Joann Brandenburg, of Frankford, Del., had just gotten out of her car about 11 p.m. and was walking across the parking lot when she was attacked, police said.

She drove herself to Anne Arundel Medical Center where she was treated and released.

Pair arrested on drug charges

County police arrested a South County man and woman on drug charges Thursday night after a raid on a house in the 5000 block of Lerch Drive in Shadyside.

Officers, who had a search warrant, said they found an ounce of PCP and a small amount of marijuana, police said.

Sherry Horseman, 31, who lives in the house on Lerch Drive, and William M. Mitchell, 29, of the 5900 block of Rockhold Drive in Deale, were charged with possession of PCP with intent to distribute, possession of PCP, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
