Westinghouse hired for DEED project
Westinghouse Electric Corp. has received a $2.2 million contract from the Maryland Department of Employment and Economic Development to modernize the handling of unemployment insurance claim certifications and quarterly employer wage and tax reports.
The contract was won by Westinghouse's Imaging and Data Systems, a division of Linthicum-based Westinghouse Electronic Systems.
Using Westinghouse's Managed Images and Data Access System (MIDAS), DEED will be able to scan 40,000 documents daily and read them using character-recognition software, the company said.
Tom Crowley, DEED program manager for MIDAS, said the new system will help the department to more easily retrieve information and reduce data entry costs.
Ad agency gets top prize in agri-marketing contest
Richardson, Myers & Donofrio, a Baltimore-based marketing communications agency, took top honors in the National Agri-Marketing Association's East Awards Competition. The 30-year-old association is a national organization with more than 2,500 members.
The ad agency won a best-in-show award for a four-color print advertisement created for American Cyanamid Co.'s Animal +V Health Division. The ad, called "Holy Pig," promotes a feed additive used by hog farmers to protect livestock from diseases. The agency's work for American Cyanamid of Wayne, N.J., also won awards in several other categories.
BWI business group wins 'Mercury' award
The BWI Business Partnership Inc., a nonprofit, public-private association of employers in the BWI business district, has been honored at the annual International Mercury Awards Competition.
The Partnership won a "Mercury" award for the design and content of its 1994 annual report, "Spirit of Success Soars."
The competition is sponsored by MerComm Inc., which was established to honor public relations and corporate communications and draws entries from more than 30 countries. MerComm, an independent organization based in New York, has presented awards for eight years in five categories: video, design, marketing, mass communications and annual reports.
TV advertising bureau honors W. B. Doner
W. B. Doner & Co.'s television commercial created for Baltimore and Washington Ford Dealers Advertising Association has won a national advertising award from the Television Bureau of Advertising.
The commercial, called "Look At This," promoted a 3.9 percent interest rate for three Ford vehicles and aired in the Baltimore and Washington markets in 1994.
The award, part of the 19th annual Television Bureau of Advertising's Automotive Commercial Competition, was presented in February at the National Automobile Dealers Association's convention in Dallas.
Doner also has has been selected to create a North American advertising campaign for PeopleSoft Inc., a California-based software company.
12 retail companies hire Millman Search
Millman Search Group Inc., an executive search firm in Baltimore, has been selected to provide personnel recruitment and consulting services for 12 retail companies.
The new clients include Be Be Sport, a leather goods chain; Berretta, manufacturer and retailer of firearms and apparel; Gruen, manufacturer and off-price retailer of watches; Kenneth Cole, retailer of shoes and accessories; Lenox China, retailer of tableware, giftware and accessories; Max Studio, women's clothing store chain; and Northface, an off-price retail chain featuring outdoor goods.
The others are Popeye's, the fast-food chain; Rocky Mountain Chocolates, retailer of chocolates and confections; Sgt. Leisure, an off-price chain of men's and women's apparel stores; Tootsie's, a chain of women's apparel stores; and Westpoint Pepperell, an off-price chain selling linens and domestics.
Millman Search Group, which also has offices in Mobile and Honolulu, places executives for retail operations throughout the United States.
Vetter elected president of restaurant group unit
The Southern Maryland Chapter of the Restaurant Association of Maryland has elected Chuck Vetter, owner of Perkins Family Restaurant and Bakery in California, Md., president for 1995.
The Restaurant Association of Maryland, based in Baltimore, was founded in 1935 to represent the food service industry. It has more than 2,400 members in four chapters and is working on creating a fifth. The Southern Maryland Chapter represents Calvert, St. Mary's and Charles counties.
BBB hires Haines as certified arbitrator
C. Gordon Haines has been appointed by the Better Business Bureau as a certified arbitrator.
The Better Business Bureau offers arbitration for dispute resolution between local and national businesses and their customers.
Mr. Haines also was recently appointed to the board of the Depression & Related Affective Disorders Association (DRADA), a nonprofit organization working in cooperation with the department of psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
A partner with the Baltimore law firm of Wright, Constable & Skeen, Mr. Haines specializes in corporate law and employee benefits.
Sass produces Head Sports campaign
Sass & Associates, an Annapolis-based advertising agency, has produced a consumer and trade campaign for Head Sports, featuring the new Head Pro Iron.
The ads, created for Head Golf in Colorado, ran in consumer publications such as Golf Week and Golf World and trade publications such as Golf Shop Operations, Golf Pro and Golf Product News.
French Bray honored for good management
French Bray Inc., a Glen Burnie-based printer, has received an award for management excellence in the National Association of Printers and Lithographers Management Plus Awards.
The firm, which employs 156 people and offers printing and pre-press services, received one of 12 "Silver Awards" for being among "the best managed graphic arts companies in the U.S. and Canada."
Ronald L. Bray, company president, accepted the award at an NAPL conference in Tucson, Ariz. NAPL is a nonprofit trade association representing the commercial printing industry.
The awards are sponsored by NAPL, American Printer magazine and Didde Web Press Company.
