An electrical problem caused a fire that heavily damaged a three-story Columbia townhouse early Saturday, according to the state fire marshal's office.
Bo Soon Park and his family, of the 5600 block of April Journey Way in Columbia's Dorsey's Search village, were still being housed by the American Red Cross yesterday, said W. Faron Taylor, deputy state fire marshal. Michael McGarvey, whose adjoining townhouse was slightly damaged, was able to return to his home later that day.
No one was injured in the fire, Mr. Taylor said.
According to fire officials, the fire began behind a wall at the Parks' home. Mr. Park's 11-year-old son saw the fire about 11:40 a.m. and alerted other family members. They left the house after calling 911.
Firefighters arrived shortly afterward and took about an hour to
douse the fire, which caused $70,000 damage to the Park house and $15,000 damage to the McGarvey house, fire officials said.
