Nicolini successfully defended her title in the mile run at the National Scholastic Championships in Syracuse, N.Y., with a time of 4:51.99. Her time is the second fastest in the nation this season and the fourth fastest in meet history.

Riismandel, a 5-foot-5 senior point guard, led Wilde Lake to the state 1A championship. In two games, she totaled 27 points, seven rebounds, nine assists and eight steals in victories over Pocomoke (64-47) in the semifinals and Southern of Garrett (56-46) in the final.

Basketball
Thornton, a 6-foot-5 senior forward, led Dunbar to its third consecutive state championship. In two games, he totaled 58 points, 29 rebounds and six assists in victories over Edgewood (80-55) on Friday and Oakland Mills (100-58) on Saturday for the 2A championship.
