Commission approves convenience store plan
The Westminster Planning Commission has approved a revised plan for a convenience store with gas pumps and a sandwich shop to be built on a vacant lot at West Main and Carroll streets.
Owner S. H. "Jack" Tevis won praise for a site model that showed a red brick building with an awning set back from Main Street at the northeast corner of the property.
The design is an attempt to balance residents' requests for a building that would blend into the neighborhood with the logo and corporate design displays required by Shell Oil Co., Mr. Tevis' gasoline supplier.
"On behalf of the Historic District Commission, I would like to thank you for your efforts on behalf of the community," commission member Carol Wiskeman told Mr. Tevis.
Mr. Tevis agreed to send Shell a letter from the planning commission asking the company to waive its requirement for a modern canopy over the gasoline pumps. Commission members said the canopy would clash with the area's historic look.
