Police looking for a theft suspect ended up arresting a Severna Park man on drug charges Wednesday morning after the man acted suspiciously while standing at a telephone booth, police said.
Officer Leroy Coking was on routine patrol shortly before 12:30 a.m. when he saw a man at Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard and McGuirk Road who matched the description of a suspect in a theft Officer Coking had just reported, police said.
When Officer Coking drove by, the man hid his face and upper body in the telephone booth and appeared to hide something inside his pants, the officer said. Officer Coking approached the man, who agreed to a search. The officer found a bag of marijuana, police said.
James George Smith, 23, of the 400 block of Retford Drive was charged with possession of marijuana. Mr. Smith was not the man sought in the theft Officer Coking had investigated, police said.
