LOS ANGELES -- Gov. Pete Wilson has decided he can win the Republican presidential nomination and probably will announce his entry into the race by month's end, GOP sources close to California's chief executive said this week.
While they added that Mr. Wilson has yet to tell anyone he definitely will run -- and left open the possibility he could opt out -- they agreed that, as one put it, "From what he's told me himself and from all the activities he's begun, it looks like a go."
Mr. Wilson would become the presumptive favorite in the biggest primary state in the country, and a top contender in a field now dominated by Senate leader Bob Dole.
Mr. Wilson is an accomplished fund-raiser and strategist who has won nine of his 10 elections, and his stand in favor of abortion rights is seen as an asset.
