The Volunteer: Ann Andercyk has been a patient care volunteer with Hospice of the Chesapeake for more than a year but began hospice work when she helped care for a neighbor with AIDS.

As a volunteer, Ms. Andercyk tends terminally ill patients in their homes, giving family members time to go to work, run errands or take a break. Since becoming a volunteer, she has worked with six patients, three of whom had AIDS.

A replenishment specialist with Office Depot's distribution center in Savage, she is married with three grown children and is a member of the Anchor Baptist Church in Pasadena.

Allison Alexander, the community relations director for Hospice of the Chesapeake, writes that Ms. Andercyk is a "most caring and compassionate" volunteer.

"Ann possesses the gentle strength that hospice patients and families can rely on as she brings her genuine concern and love to them."

Volunteer's comment: "This family I'm taking care of right now, I go there three nights a week . . . it's almost selfish on my part because I get such a reward from working with these people.

"We never know if we're ever going to need this sort of care. People don't realize how burnt out a care-giver can get, the overwhelming responsibility.

"I like people to know this kind of help is available. A lot of the services they offer at the hospice are absolutely free.

"If it weren't for the support that I get from my husband . . I couldn't do it unless I had his backing. He's a great support."

About the organization: Hospice of the Chesapeake in Millersville will be conducting a training class for prospective volunteers beginning on Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

In addition to helping patients, volunteers work in the office and assist with activities such as fund-raisers.
