North County sports complex is being considered by Gary

THE BALTIMORE SUN

County Executive John G. Gary said yesterday that he is considering a sports complex for North County, with several lighted fields. It would be on 40 acres of county-owned land next to a proposed jail on Ordnance Road in Glen Burnie.

Mr. Gary has instructed the county's Department of Recreation and Parks to draw up plans and proposals, said Larry R. Telford, a spokesman for Mr. Gary. The sports complex could be ready by the spring of 1998.

The complex is one of several amenities that Mr. Gary, a Glen Burnie High School graduate, has proposed for North County. He is committed to turning the Superblock, a vacant lot in downtown Glen Burnie, into a complex of residences, offices and shops. He also intends to finance a $750,000 ice skating rink in the next budget, and he wants to establish a North County campus for Anne Arundel Community College at Arundel Center North and to build a swim center.

Tentative plans for the complex include several lighted softball fields for men's, women's and coed softball; two or more lighted, multipurpose fields for soccer, lacrosse and flag football; a lighted baseball field; a concession area; restrooms; a playground; and a picnic area.
