A Guilford man was convicted Wednesday in Howard Circuit Court of raping a co-worker at a Columbia convenience store in June.
Riaz Ahmed Alvi, 34, was found guilty of second-degree rape and battery for attacking the woman at knifepoint shortly after the store at the King's Contrivance Village Center closed June 22.
The incident occurred on the woman's second day of work at the shop, according to testimony.
Alvi, who testified that the woman consented to have intercourse with him, will be sentenced May 23. He could be sentenced to up to 40 years in prison.
A jury of nine men and three women could not reach verdicts on four other charges, including first-degree rape -- an offense that carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
