Mother accused of abuse

A Taneytown woman is accused of leaving her 18-month-old daughter alone at home late Tuesday night, police said.

Terri Lynn Manolovich, 34, of the 100 block of E. Baltimore St. was being held yesterday evening on $25,000 bond on charges of child abuse, reckless endangerment of the child, confining an unattended child, disorderly conduct and failure to obey the lawful order of a police officer.

Officer Edward Engel said he stopped a 1988 Suzuki in Taneytown for having improper license plates.

After stopping the vehicle, which was driven by a man, a female passenger got out of the vehicle and began shouting, "Search me for drugs, go ahead touch me," and threw her coat to the ground, the officer reported.

Officer Engel wrote in charging papers he told the woman several times to stop shouting and be quiet, but she continued shouting obscenities at him, appeared intoxicated and was unsteady on her feet.

The woman was arrested at 11:50 p.m. Police said the woman had a blood alcohol content of 0.26.

The officer said he knew the woman and asked her who was watching her small daughter. The woman told the officer someone was at the house. But the driver told the officer he was taking the woman to Emmitsburg to purchase beer and no one was with the child.

The officer went to the woman's home and found the front door unlocked and the child in a crib on the second floor.

The officer said there was no food or milk in the refrigerator or in the house, but beer cans were piled on the kitchen stove, on the dining room table and in the living room.

Trash was piled halfway up the side of the refrigerator, according to the officer.

The child was turned over to her grandmother after the county Department of Social Services was notified, Taneytown Police Chief Mel Diggs said.

Police cited Paul Melville of Taneytown for operating an unregistered vehicle and other traffic charges.

Several Baltimore Street neighbors said they were not familiar with the child's mother.
