School board to be briefed on computer network plans

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Anne Arundel County school board members will hear tomorrow the latest developments on plans for a sophisticated instructional computer network aimed at linking the county's 117 schools.

The project is being revised now that the eight-member board has cut Superintendent Carol S. Parham's original budget request in half. The board budgeted $3.5 million to install computers in 12 high schools, along with a network to link them.

County Executive John G. Gary and the County Council, which has five new members, still have to review the school system's budget.

Last fall, the council released $500,000 to pay for a scaled-down pilot of the Advanced School Automation Project, known as ASAP, but not before questioning the project's lack of detailed planning.

The ASAP pilot was limited to Arundel High School, Arundel Middle School and several elementary schools, which have not been selected.

The Board of Education has estimated that it will cost about $35 million to put computers in all county schools by 2000.

The board meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. at school system headquarters on Riva Road in Annapolis.
