BRRC, Howard Striders share Challenge honors

THE BALTIMORE SUN

The Baltimore Road Runners Club's Doug Mock won the 18th annual Maryland-District of Columbia RRCA Ten-Mile Team Challenge Sunday at Howard Community College, but the host Howard County Striders ran off with the men's championship.

The order was just the opposite in the female division, where the Striders' Bea Marie Fritsch finished first, but the BBRC claimed the women's championship.

Howard County successfully defended its overall team championship, edging Baltimore, 335-344. In the men's division, the top 15 for each club were counted, and among the women, the top four were placed.

"What it really came down to is up front we were pretty close," said BRRC men's coach Jeff Sanborn, who finished 16th among Baltimore finishers. "But they [Striders] scored six guys between 10 and 20. They had five in a row.

"We didn't score from 8 through 20; that's where they beat us. Twenty to 30, we were really tough."

Elder runner

It's been a busy February for area runner Roy Elder.

On Feb. 4, he completed the Tybee Island Marathon in Savannah, Ga., in 4 hours, 17 minutes. A week later, he completed the Carolina Marathon in Columbia, S.C., in 4:19, and the next day -- after arriving in Hampton, Va., at 1 a.m. -- he finished the Hampton Roads Half-Marathon in 2:06.

The Carolina run was the 61st marathon in nine years of running for Elder, who is 65.

Races off course

Runners continue to face uncertain footing for races held on city streets.

St. Louis is the latest example. Police there have rejected bids to have running events on city streets because of concerns over runners' safety and the number of officers required to staff such events.

Among the races affected were this month's Third Olympiad Memorial Marathon, which has been held for 22 years. Organizers plan to hold the race in suburban Chesterfield.

The St. Patrick's Day Parade Run, which attracted 5,000 participants last year, is in limbo. Race chairman Jim Crowe said he is negotiating with city officials.
