Children to perform for seniors group

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Penguins ventured into Linthicum with the recent snowfall, spotted an igloo and decided to hang around town for a while to join in a nursery school show.

The 4-year-olds in Jane Sovern's classes at St. John's Nursery School have been invited to perform for the Senior Fellowship of St. John Lutheran Church at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday.

The children, along with their mascot and new friends from the South Pole, are calling the performance, the "Snoopy, Snow and Penguin Show."

Adeline Bradshaw will provide piano accompaniment for the program, which will include children as dancing snowflakes, Frosty and a flock of penguins. The penguins' adventures will center on an igloo (made from milk gallon jugs) at the South Pole, where penguin baby, Christina Crawford, plays.

School mascot Snoopy, portrayed by Richard Lombardi, will be "bought" by cheerleaders Erin Weber, Megan Burkhardt and Lauren Takovich during the song, "How Much is That Doggie in the Window?"

Erin Harrington will change the mood to St. Patrick's Day with some Irish dancing. She will be joined by her sister, Katie, and friends Laura and Katherine Fries, all former nursery school students.

The nursery school will be accepting registration for the 1995-1996 school year at 1 p.m. March 23. Classes are available for 3- and 4-year-olds.

Interested parents should register by calling Robin Harrington at 859-5158.

About this time of year, avid gardeners need a lot of patience. Whenever there is a nice day -- and there have been several -- they yearn to get outside and dig in the soil.

While waiting for spring and the warming of the ground, two local clubs busy themselves with indoor activities in preparation for the first day they can get that shovel into the earth.

The Ferndale Garden Club will learn how to get a jump on spring -- by starting their flowers indoors -- from guest speaker Vern Holland at the monthly meeting at 8 p.m. tomorrow. The meeting will be at the Ferndale Senior Center.

Each year club members fill the large barrels along the business district with flowers. By starting seeds now they hope to have an abundant supply of plants ready for transplanting in the spring.

Each meeting, a club member volunteers to share a gardening topic with the group. This month, Cindy Schneider will present the horticulture report.

The Ferndale Garden Club meets the fourth Tuesday of the month. New members and guests are welcome.

For information, please call Shirley Hertz at 761-8045.

Painting flowers, wreaths and herbs on a porcelain clay heart-shaped pendant will be the craft project after the monthly meeting of the Friendly Thyme Herb Club at 10 a.m., Friday at the Ferndale Senior Center.

Member Helen Burns has made the clay pieces and will provide ideas for decorating them with acrylic paints.

She asks that members bring three items to the meeting: a small liner brush, a 3/8 -inch or No. 5 flat brush and paper towels.

For information, please call June Burton at 766-8113.

This year's observance, part of a global celebration of Christian communities throughout the world, was prepared by Christian women of Ghana and explores the theme, "The Earth Is a House for All People."

A luncheon will follow the service. Each participant is asked to bring a covered dish to share. Donations of nonperishable food and paper products will be collected for North County Emergency Outreach Network.

The church is at 116 Marydell Road.
