Select high school team travels to hockey event

Howard County was represented in the Hockey Challenge Cup Competition in Montreal over the weekend. The Howard County High School Select Team left Baltimore Thursday afternoon to play hockey over the weekend. The team returns today.

To help the boys introduce Howard County to other hockey teams, County Executive Charles I. Ecker and Councilmen Charles C. Feaga and C. Vernon Gray presented the team with pencils and buttons for gifts and county flags to wave.

The presentation was Feb. 17.

Howard High's hockey coach Michael Rand put the group together in three days after learning that a team had dropped out of the Challenge Cup, yielding space for another squad.

Howard's 15 boys play for county high school hockey teams and have played club hockey together since early childhood.

The boys were chosen for the team because of their leadership and character, as well as their athletic abilities.

The Select Team includes Ellicott City and Elkridge boys Matt French, Tim Plourde, Randy Gaigler, Matt Shagogue, Jory Rand, Bill Kinlock, Dan Havery and Brian McClelland.

Boys in other areas of the county include Jake Limbert, Kwante Carter, Ron Olson, Jon Wiley, Jon Vassil and Matt Rawley.

Gil Min from Carroll County is goalie.

Dunloggin Middle School is trying to solve the mystery of the missing time capsule. Caitlin Donohue, Emily Cooke, Scott Paulis and Peter Armans are students who are investigating the history of Dunloggin Middle School.

Through their research, the students have learned that some of the first members of the school's staff buried a time capsule on school grounds. But no one knows its location.

If you can give these children some clues, they'd appreciate it.

Also consider donating memorabilia from the school's past. Photographs, yearbooks, newspaper clips or other mementos would be welcomed.

For information, call teacher Penny Zimring at (410) 313-2831.

In other news at the school, Dunloggin special education teacher Denise Fader has a new project for her six students.

She hit on a plan to introduce them to the working world and contacted Columbia Palace 9 Theater for help. Manager Jerry Rose was more than welcoming, and so began a happy fusion of work and education.

The students spend two hours at the school each Friday. For one hour, theater employee David Bush, a local college student, teaches them how to run the projector, the ticket booth and the refreshment counter.

During the second hour, the middle schoolers work. They prepare the theater for the weekend, and recently did some promotional work.

The theater's employees appreciate the extra help, and the students are learning as they work.

Last week at the Master Gardener Training Session, Ellicott City resident Rondalyn Reeser let 25 adults have fun with worms.

She was speaking on the topic of vermicomposting -- composting with worms -- when she passed around containers and bedding, food and worms, letting the "big kids" make a mini-composting bin. She makes a similar presentation for children's groups.

Six Ellicott City residents are in the class: Virginia Bruce, Susan Colley, Leisa Hidey, Mary Opitz, Cyrus Swett and Donna White.

Other class members travel from more far-flung locales such as Annapolis, Lutherville, and Severn.

Here's a reminder to everyone who has been saving cash register tapes from Safeway and Giant.

Saturday is the last day that schools can accept them, so send the tapes to school where they'll do some good.

If you don't have any children in the school system, take the tapes to the office of the nearest school. They'll be appreciated.
