Mount tops Marist in OT, 81-77

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Chris McGuthrie's three-pointer from 22-feet with 1:18 left in overtime gave the Mountaineers the lead for good and went to defeat Marist, 81-77, in a Northeast Conference game last night.

Marist (15-10, 11-6) had just taken its first lead since the first half on a pair of free throws by Danny Basile with 1:39 left. After McGuthrie's three-pointer, the Mount made five of six free throws to seal the win.

McGuthrie finished with 18 points and Michael Watson (Mount St. Joseph) added 17. Basile led all scorers with 23 points for Marist and Alan Tomidy added 21 and 12 rebounds.

The Mountaineers (14-11, 12-5) led throughout most of the first half, leading by eight points at halftime. They built the lead as large as 11 in the second half at 52-41 before the Red Foxes rallied. Marist tied the game for the first time in the second half at 60-60 with 6:55 to play.

The Mountaineers had a 69-67 lead when McGuthrie missed the front end of the one-and-one, and Marist recovered to call time out with 15 seconds to play. Basile dribbled 30 feet from the basket and, with one second left in the game, was fouled by Riley Inge.

Basile made both shots to send the game to overtime.

* Goucher 99, Catholic 86: Predag Durkovic scored a game-high 29 points and added 14 rebounds, leading visiting Goucher over Catholic in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals.

Goucher (17-9) advances to tomorrow's night championship game against York, which defeated Mary Washington, 64-61, in the other semifinal contest.

Leading only 85-84 with 1:29 remaining in regulation, Goucher converted 14 free throws to keep Catholic (16-10) at bay. For the game, Goucher was 28-for-34.

Women

* Salisbury State 69, Goucher 56: Kristi Kauffman scored a game-high 29 points as host Salisbury State (21-5) defeated Goucher (17-9) in a Capital Athletic Conference semifinal.

The Sea Gull advance to tomorrow's championship against Marymount.

Kauffman scored 20 of her points in the first half as the Sea Gulls built a 37-21 halftime lead. Salisbury State's defense forced 14 turnovers and held the Gophers to 25 percent shooting in the first half.

* Mount St. Mary's 41, Marist 40: Susie Rowlyk scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds as visiting Mount St. Mary's (19-5, 15-1) defeated Marist (9-15, 0-10) in a Northeast Conference game.
