STATE WOMEN'S DIVISION III AT A GLANCE

THE BALTIMORE SUN

FROSTBURG STATE

1994 record: 5-7.

Coach: Sharon Irwin (23rd).

Outlook: Frostburg State lost six of its final seven games, three by one goal. The Bobcats play their first four games at home, and travel for seven of their remaining 10 games. Senior attackman Alison Bruae is the top returning scorer with 19 goals and five assists. Junior midfielder Erin Eaton had 11 goals and three assists last year.

GOUCHER

1994 record: 5-7.

Coach: Andrea Bradley (third).

Outlook: Goucher, which has a 15-23 record the past three seasons, continues to rebuild. As a freshman, Crystal Butcher made 206 saves with a .609 save percentage. Junior attackman Courtney Crangi, who had 46 goals in 1993, is back after sitting out a year with a knee injury.

JOHNS HOPKINS

1994 record: 16-1 (Division III semifinalist).

Coach: Janine Tucker (second).

Outlook: Johns Hopkins will be in the hunt for a second straight Centennial Conference title and its first NCAA title even after losing top scorer Rebecca Savage. Junior attackmen Jenn Ward and Francine Brennan, the second- and third-leading scorers, need to maintain an offense that reached double figures in 15 of 17 games and scored more than 19 goals five times. The defense returns only one starter, and the goalie situation is uncertain.

COLLEGE OF NOTRE DAME

1994 record: 7-5.

Coach: Melissa Falen (sixth).

Outlook: Even with the graduation of three-time leading scorer Toyah Houck, the College of Notre Dame will rely on a strong offense. Sophomores Carly Goertz, Tinah Houck and Lisa Gielner will provide the offense. The Gators' defense will be anchored by last season's MVP, second-year goalkeeper Alicia Abad, and senior All-American Alison Pike.

SALISBURY STATE

1994 record: 8-4.

Coach: Dawn Chamberlin (seventh).

Outlook: The Sea Gulls, who finished No.10, are coming off one of the most successful seasons in school history and return five of their six top scorers. Sophomore Candice Blanchette, who led Salisbury State in scoring in her first season, teams with senior Flossy Owens as the main scoring combination. Owens, the top scorer in 1992 and 1993, played only two games in an injury-plagued junior year. Salisbury State also limited opponents nine goals or fewer in seven of 12 games last season.

St. MARY'S COLLEGE

1994 record: 5-6.

Coach: Tammy Gage (fifth).

Outlook: The Seahawks graduated their top defender in Carolyn Johnson, and their starting goalie for the past two seasons, Jen Speer, but they do return senior attacker Suzanne DeHaan, who led the team in scoring last year. Other key returnees include Lisa Demeno, Kristi Miller and Erin Shutes. Newcomers Kristi LaVardera (Loch Raven) and Missy Lewandowski (Broadneck) should help the Seahawks reach the .500 mark.

WASHINGTON COLLEGE

1994 record: 2-12.

Coach: Sarah Feyerherm (sixth).

Outlook: The Shoremen regrouped from an 0-10 Centennial Conference mark to defeat Widener and Goucher at the end of last season. But Washington College graduated nine players and will have an abundance of youth. Senior attackman Megan McCurdy is the most active player on the team, scoring 31 goals and picking up 56 ground balls. Junior goalkeeper Peggy Busker, who allowed 14 goals per game, is in her second season as the starter.

WESTERN MARYLAND

1994 record: 12-2.

Coach: Kim Easterday (18th).

Outlook: Western Maryland loses only two starters from a team that finished second in the Centennial Conference to Hopkins. It returns Denise Sarver, who tied a school-record for single-season points with 60. Junior G Marcie Delahoz has played every minute of the past two seasons, making 101 saves and allowing 11 goals per game. Senior defensemen Heather Bailey and Stacey Baker have started on defense for three years.
