Wilde Lake's upset victory over Mount Hebron last Thursday in boys basketball propelled the Wildecats back into the Class 1A South Region playoff picture.
And, with the Wildecats' 38-37 victory over Hammond last night, Wilde Lake needs to beat Centennial to edge Victor Cullen of Frederick County (11-4) for the sixth playoff spot.
Region director Lynn Carr said that Wilde Lake would finish with 3.70 points if it beat Centennial, and Victor Cullen with 3.67.
"But it's so close that I'll have to add up all the numbers about 10 times before it's official," Carr said.
In the Class 3A East Region, the seedings as of Monday were: 1. Broadneck 6.50 points; 2. Mount Hebron 4.72; 3. Douglas 4.31; 4. Poly 4.31; 5. Howard 3.11; 6. Northern 2.94; 7. Centennial 2.55.
In the Class 2A South Region Atholton is the top seed with Oakland Mills second and Potomac of Prince George's County third. Then it's Great Mills of St. Mary's County and Lackey of Charles County. Glenelg and Surrattsville of Prince George's County are battling for the sixth seed.
Longest losing streak?
The Hammond boys basketball team (3-18 overall, 0-13 league) has lost 17 straight games after last night's 38-37 loss to Wilde Lake -- the longest county losing streak during the 1990s and one of the longest in county history.
The Bears are threatening to lose all 14 league games, a feat last accomplished by Glenelg during the 1990-91 season in which the Gladiators posted a 3-18 overall record.
Hammond's last chance for a league victory will be tomorrow at Glenelg.
Coach buys restaurant
Jerry Keith, who has coached basketball at Wilde Lake for 15 years, has bought the former Sneakers Sports Bar in Long Reach with his partner, Floyd Markowitz, and they hope to open in early spring.
Keith, 47, a former bar manager at JK's Pub in Wilde Lake, says the yet-to-be-named neighborhood pub will offer "unique" sports services and 25 percent of the menu will feature authentic Irish cuisine.
The new restaurant already has sponsored two recreational softball teams for 1995.
Hill's scoring record
Every time Mike Hill of Oakland Mills scores he adds to his career school scoring record of 1,138 points.
Hill scored his 1,000th point Feb. 1 in a game against Howard to become only the second Scorpion to reach 1,000 points. Coleman Scott was the other.
