Sophomore center Kim Schaffrick's short bank shot with seven seconds left in the third overtime yesterday gave host Towson State a 72-70 win over North Carolina-Greensboro and moved the Tigers past UNC-Greensboro into first place in the Big South Conference.
Schaffrick ended the longest game in TSU history that featured 13 ties and 10 lead changes.
UNC-Greensboro (14-9, 9-2) sent the game into the first overtime when junior Alisa Moore hit a layup with 31 seconds left for a 49-49 score.
In the first overtime, Moore kept UNC-Greensboro alive by hitting another layup for a 56-56 score with 49 seconds left. Moore finished with a career-high 24 points and 10 rebounds.
Towson (12-10, 11-2) trailed by a basket three times in the third overtime before taking a 70-68 lead on Trinette Tucker's three-pointer with 58 seconds left. The Spartans (14-9, 9-2) tied the game at 70 with 42 seconds left before LaTonya Joyner's rebound set up the game-winner.
* St. Peter's 60, Loyola 55: Tonya Gertrude led a second-half rally as St. Peter's (19-4, 10-1) beat Loyola (14-8, 5-6) in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game.
Loyola enjoyed a nine-point halftime edge -- 29-20 -- prior to the rally. Gertrude finished with a team-leading 16. Loyola's Patty Stoffey led all scorers with 34.
* Navy 63, Fordham 52: Becky Dowling scored 18 to pace host Navy (14-11, 9-4 Patriot League) past Fordham (15-9, 9-3).
Adria Schneck added 15 for Navy. Suzanne Magwire led Fordham with 16.
* Frederick CC 82, Mont.-Rockville 69: Theresa Arnett scored 23 points and Ashanta Sellers added 20 and 16 rebounds, leading Frederick Community College (26-1) past Montgomery-Rockville (20-2) to capture the Maryland JuCo Tournament title at Garrett Community College.
Tracey Grossnickle scored 14 points for Frederick, which has won 26 straight games since a season-opening loss to Mount Aloysius (Pa.).
Lacey Hartley led Montgomery-Rockville (20-2) with 20 points and Donita Smith added 16.
