Nominations sought for entrepreneur awards

The Maryland Chapter of the Entrepreneur of the Year Institute is seeking nominations for its sixth annual entrepreneur of the year Awards, sponsored by Ernst & Young, Inc. magazine, Merrill Lynch & Co., The Baltimore Sun Co., law firm Piper & Marbury and Sprint Corp.

Maryland winners will compete in the nationwide program, which was created in 1986 by Ernst & Young to honor outstanding owners of emerging companies.

Nominations, which do not require a fee, must be received by April 7. Finalists will be announced May 25 and winners June 27 at an awards banquet at the Hyatt Regency in Baltimore.

This year's panel of Maryland judges includes: Stephen A. Geppi, president and CEO of Diamond Comic Distributors Inc. of Baltimore; Elizabeth Grieb, partner with Piper & Marbury; Charles O. Heller, director of the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship, University of Maryland; Freeman A. Hrabowski III, president of the University of Maryland Baltimore County; Donald P. Hutchinson, president of the Greater Baltimore Committee Inc.; Barbara B. Lucas, vice president of public affairs and corporate secretary of the Black & Decker Corp.; Carroll D. Nordhoff, executive vice president of McCormick & Co. Inc.; and James D. Shaw, senior vice president and business manager of The Baltimore Sun.

Eisner firm launches Scientific American ads

Eisner & Associates Inc., a marketing, advertising and public relations agency with offices in Baltimore and Washington, has created an advertising campaign for Scientific American magazine.

The campaign began in Inside Media on Feb. 15 and will run in Adweek, Advertising Age, Automotive News and Marketing Computers in February and March.

Scientific American, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, has a circulation of more than 600,000 in the United States and 138 other countries. It focuses on the interdependence of technology, science and business.

Environmental firm opens unit in Arundel

Environmental Waste Management Associates, a New Jersey-based environmental consulting company, has opened a subsidiary in Millersville in Anne Arundel County.

The new company, Environmental Waste Management Associates of Maryland Inc., will be headed by Jeffery K. Burks, a geologist and former president of the mid-Atlantic region of Handex Environmental Management Inc.

Founded in 1987, Environmental Waste Management Associates is based in Wayne, N.J.

Nevins & Associates gets 2 new clients

Owings-Mills based Nevins & Associates has acquired two new accounts: Primestar, a broadcast satellite company, and Baltimore Industrial Medical Centers.

Nevins & Associates will handle public and media relations, advertising, direct mail, television, events plannings and budget development for Primestar, which offers mini-dish satellite television service.

The firm will provide marketing, public relations and advertising support for Baltimore Industrial Medical Centers, which operates medical and health clinics specializing in worker's compensation injuries.

Noble Steed to handle educational campaign

Noble Steed Associates, a Baltimore-based advertising and marketing firm, will produce a public awareness project for the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council, an independent organization funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The campaign, "Inclusion: A Community Education Campaign," will use television, radio and other media to inform Marylanders about people with developmental disabilities and the contributions they make to the community.

Adams Sandler gains 3 new clients

Adams Sandler, a Baltimore-based advertising and public relations firm, will do advertising work for Integrated Health Services, Pioneer Eyecare and Swiss Telecom North America.
