A family of four, awakened early yesterday morning by the sound of a smoke alarm, escaped uninjured from a fire in a 200-year-old brick and log house in the 4800 block of Baughman Mill Road.
The fire started around the chimney and spread to the attic, which had been partially refinished, county fire officials said.
Lineboro Fire Chief John Krebs said firefighters encountered "heavy fire in the attic upon their arrival, but were able to make a good stop" on the fire.
They brought the fire under control in about 35 minutes.
The 2 1/2 -story house suffered fire damage only in the attic and the area above it and some water damage to one room on the second floor, Chief Krebs said.
He said the state fire marshal's office was called to determine the cause of the blaze and to examine the metal liner in the chimney.
Eight pieces of fire equipment from Lineboro, Manchester, Hampstead and Glenrock, along with 50 firefighters and officers, responded to the blaze.
9- They remained at the site for four hours.
