NEW HOME
The Baltimore Area Visitors Center -- a first stop for thousands of tourists and a help to natives, as well -- dedicates its new quarters at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday in the Constellation Building, across from Harborplace's Pratt Street Pavilion.
You remember the Constellation Building, the once controversial minimuseum and entry to the USS Constellation, before the historic Navy sailing ship was recently reduced to an endangered black-and-yellow hulk in dire need of major money for repairs.
Two visitors' center offices -- one from the Inner Harbor's West Wall and the other on Pratt Street not far from Oriole Park -- are being consolidated in the new quarters. Combined, those centers have been visited by 250,000 people a year and average 5,000 requests each month from folks wanting to learn more about the city.
NAVY VISITOR
The USS La Moure County, a Navy tank landing ship, is docked at the Inner Harbor's West Wall this weekend. The
fTC 423-foot-long gray ship is here in conjunction with the 1995 Black Engineer of the Year Conference.
You can tour the ship free from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. today and tomorrow. The vessel will depart Sunday morning.
The conference, which opened yesterday, continues through tomorrow at the Convention Center. A precollege job fair will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Convention Center. A career development seminar will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow, same place. Both are open to the public.
