Former Washington Capitals defenseman Rod Langway, 37, a two-time winner of the Norris Trophy as the NHL's best defenseman, signed yesterday with the Richmond Renegades of the East Coast Hockey League.
Langway, a seven-time NHL All-Star who hasn't played competitively since the Capitals released him in July 1993, will rejoin a former Washington teammate -- Renegades general manager Craig Laughlin.
"His ability to teach our young defensemen will help as we get ready for the playoff push," Laughlin told the Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch.
Renegades president Harry Feuerstein said Langway, who has played in 104 NHL playoff games, will receive approximately the same salary as the rest of the team. ECHL paychecks average $333 a week.
