* 16-18 boys -- Even a once-in-a-lifetime shooting performance wasn't enough to knock off the First Baptist Church of Guilford last week in the Christian Fellowship Basketball League.
Despite Antonio McCray's 8-for-8 shooting from the field, including 4-for-4 from three-point range, First Baptist held off Isle of Patmas, 57-39, to stay perfect in the league.
After McCray (20 points) burned First Baptist (5-0) from the outside the entire first half, the victors switched to a three-two defense to force the sharpshooter to the inside.
The strategy worked, as First Baptist -- behind the clutch shooting of Tim Spruill (16 points) and Irving Conwell (13) -- pulled away for the victory.
Isle of Patmas (2-3), which was playing without leading scorer Eric Stancil, out with a knee injury, also got nine points from Aaron Carson.
Wayland Baptist stayed in a first-place tie, also improving to 5-0 with a 46-26 win over City Temple.
Johnnie Prioleau led the way with 16 points, followed by Tyrone Cook (12) and Dammon Diggs (10).
Cortey Bralon and Damon Simpson each scored 10 for City Temple (1-4).
A loss by previously unbeaten New Creation last week sets up a first-place showdown between First Baptist and Wayland Baptist, Saturday at 2 p.m. at Woodlawn High School.
In other games, Lonny Baxter had 19 and L.J. Goode had 17 to lead the Wheaton Panthers to a 64-38 win over the Woodlawn Warriors.
Mario Williams had 11 and Jeffery Baker added 10 for Woodlawn (2-3).
Jermaine Johnson scored 10 and Dwayne Wright added seven as Gillis Memorial picked up its first win of the season, edging the Woodlawn Spurs, 44-43.
The Spurs (2-3) were led by Eric Parker (16) and Damon Allen (nine).
* 15-and-under boys -- Unheralded Woodlawn tried its best to pull rank on first-place First Baptist Blue last week, but in the end the undefeated team proved to be just too much.
After succumbing to Woodlawn's pressure defense and falling behind by five at the break, First Baptist rallied for a 39-36 win in the Christian Fellowship Basketball League.
Led by Antwaun Oliver, Jabraille Jackson, William Gray and Greg Gray, First Baptist Blue (6-0) began the second half with a 6-0 run, and maintained a slim lead the rest of the way.
Mikal Plummer, Corey Copper, Justin Epps and Arthur Lewis played well for Woodlawn (1-4).
Both First Baptist's Blue team and Mount Royal (5-0) remain unbeaten in league play.
First Baptist's Red team, however, is staying within striking distance.
The Red team improved to 4-1 with a 40-21 win over Bible Way Freewill Baptist.
Colin Izzard, Teron Gary and
William Oliver led the victors, while Roland Carmichael, Jeremiah Harris and Ronnie Wilson played well for Bible Way (2-4).
Also last week, Calvin McCarthy scored 10 points and Marod Miles and David Tate each had nine as Banneker (3-2) defeated Wayland Baptist, 47-17.
