Joe Yancy (145 pounds) overcame a 4-2 deficit to pin Anne Arundel County champ Mike DiLeonardi as No. 6 Broadneck (16-2) surprised No. 4 Old Mill, 33-29, in last night's second annual 3A-4A East regional dual-meet tournament at Arundel.
County runner-up teammate Rob Peck (152) made it, 27-11, with a 10-9 victory over Larry Webster on a takedown with 10 seconds left before Old Mill went up, 29-27, on consecutive pins by Mike Hines (160), Eric Donoway (171) and top-ranked county champ Don Patterson (189).
But the Patriots forfeited to Bruins' heavyweight Arto Vartanian (24-2, 22 pins).
"Our heavyweight [Chris Riggin] had a bad leg and Arto's just too big and too strong. No championship's worth injury," said Old Mill coach Mike Hampe, whose Patriots (17-2) downed Broadneck, 34-27, earlier.
"They made some lineup changes and were very balanced, plus some things happened that didn't before."
The second-seed Bruins, who advance to this weekend's championship round of four at South Carroll High, earlier had ended Mervo's 11-match winning streak, 54-10, and top-seed Old Mill downed fourth-seed Arundel, 39-23.
It was redemption for Yancy, who was pinned against Mervo (11-3) and didn't place in last weekend's county tournament.
"I lost to DiLeonardi three times, so this gives me some confidence," said Yancy, who pinned DiLeonardi with a headlock.
Broadneck led, 13-0, after a decision by county runner-up Ben Helbig (103), Matt Ormby's buzzer-beating second-period pin at 112, and James Donner's major decision at 119, but Old Mill closed to 13-6 with the next two wins.
Tim Patterson (125) overcame a 4-1 deficit for an 8-4 win over Todd Betz, whom he'd beaten twice before, and Paul Hultgren (130), who was third in the county, earned a 6-4 decision over county runner-up Lonnie Donner (24-3).
Broadneck led, 18-6, after trading technical falls -- one by Broadneck's Isaac Putnam (135), the other by Old Mill's two-time county champ Nick Basta (140).
The win was Broadneck's third over Old Mill in coach John Mayberry's 14 seasons, the last securing a three-way tie with Annapolis for the county title three years ago.
Against Old Mill, No. 11 Arundel (10-4) got pins from Chad Webber (119) and fifth-ranked defending state champ Mark Chesla (152) -- his 22nd -- with a technical fall from county runner-up Phil Schleifer (119). DiLeonardi won a rematch of Saturday's county final, 10-7, over Arundel's sixth-ranked Isaac Haertel.
Mervo's two-time Baltimore City champ Wayne Lucas (135, 23-4) scored 12 back points in an 18-9 major decision, and city runner-up Carlos Levine (145) built a 12-2 lead before pinning Yancy.
Vartanian pinned the Mustangs' city champ Aaron Brown (Hwt., 21-3) in 49 seconds, and city runner-up Brian Cromwell (152) dropped an 11-9 decision to Peck, who scored two points at the buzzer.
