Mount Carmel's Matt Hasenei, a 6-foot senior forward, scored 39 points in last Friday's 88-58 loss to John Carroll.
That's a nice game by anyone's standards, but the fact that all of his points were scored on three-pointers -- 13 to be exact -- is even more impressive.
In fact, it's a school and metro area record.
Hasenei's effort is three shy of the state record set by Joseph Childress of the Canterbury School in Prince George's County during the 1992-93 season.
Childress, now a senior at National Christian Academy, also in Prince George's County, went 16-for-24 in a 117-41 win over DuPont Park. He finished with 52 points after converting four foul shots after successful three-pointers.
Hasenei since has added to his total by scoring 34 points -- including four three-pointers -- in Monday's 79-75 loss to against Greater Grace Academy. Tuesday, Hasenei scored 35 points, including a trio of three-pointers, in a 92-79 victory over Beth T'filoh.
Heading into tomorrow's game against Spalding, Hasenei has 72 three-pointers on the season. He is just six short of the school record for a career set last season by Jason McKinney, now an assistant coach to Leon Thomas.
"He went 13-for-17 from the three-point line in that game, but he only had three points at halftime, so 12 of them came in the second half," said Thomas, whose team is 2-19.
"He had a good week with 27 points against Harford Tech on Wednesday, getting four three-pointers there. We're down to seven players on the varsity, so he's a definite bright spot."
The Cougars play at Bowling Brook on Monday. A week later, they go on the road to play West Nottingham Academy in the first round of the Maryland Independent Schools State Tournament.
Hasenei and senior guard Bob Morris, who averages over 23 points, have been leading the Cougars.
On the girls side
With Tuesday's 32-12 victory over Beth T'filoh, Mount Carmel's girls basketball team completed the year 20-4 under coach Terry Dwyer. This despite the fact that the Cougars -- whose school consists of 185 students -- play an independent schedule, which does not include tournaments.
