Shawn Jones' brother signs here, too

Baltimore's Canadian Football League team is getting another brother act. Backup quarterback Shawn Jones said yesterday that his brother Mike will try to make the team this summer as a free safety.

Mike Jones, 6 feet 3 and 205 pounds, started four years at Georgia -- playing four times against Shawn, who quarterbacked Georgia Tech.

"He's probably one of the best defensive backs I ever played against," Shawn said, "and I played against some great college players, from Clemson to Nebraska to Florida State."

Other brother combinations on the team are Matt and Malcolm Goodwin and John and Guy Earle.

Mike Jones, who agreed to a one-year contract with an option year, was cut after a tryout with the New York Giants last season.

"He's got good size and great quickness," said Jim Popp, Baltimore's assistant general manager. "He could probably play halfback, too."

Shawn, meanwhile, said he's preparing for a tryout in May with the U.S. Basketball League, with an eye toward the NBA. "It's something I plan to do along with football," said Jones, who was a backup guard one year at Tech.

Assuming Jones makes the USBL, which plays in the summer, he would have a schedule conflict. Baltimore's training camp begins in June.
