Community group settles $4,445 insurer's claim

The Glen Burnie Improvement Association has agreed to pay its former insurer, Transamerica, $4,445 to settle a suit the company filed claiming the association had failed to pay premiums for coverage during its 1989 carnival.

The association issued a check to the company Jan. 30, according to minutes of its most recent meeting. The settlement averted a Feb. 9 court date.

Under the policy, the association was to pay premiums on a sliding scale that was based on profits from the carnival, said Charles W. Ayres, Jr., the association's attorney.

The association dropped Transamerica as its insurer shortly after the 1989 carnival.

Mother, son arrested on drug charges

A Glen Burnie woman and her 16-year-old son were arrested on drug charges at 7:30 a.m. Sunday after police searched the woman's apartment in the 8000 block of Nolpark Court.

Police said the Anne Arundel County fire marshal was investigating a fire in the home when he noticed what he thought was drug paraphernalia.

The marshal called for a narcotics detective to assist, and the detective found 4 1/2 grams of crack cocaine in a plastic bag and drug paraphernalia in plain view, police said. The drugs were valued at about $450.

Police charged Joanne Henson, 40, and her son with possession of crack cocaine and possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine.
