Pointers Run team leader chosen for chamber award

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Pointers Run Elementary School second-grade team leader Shari Hofmann has been selected a Howard County Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Educator. Nancy Utley, whose daughter Julia was in Mrs. Hofmann's class last year, nominated Mrs. Hofmann for this distinguished award.

Parents, students, former students, former student teachers, the administrators at Pointers Run and Mrs. Hofmann's colleagues overwhelmingly seconded her nomination. Pointers Run Principal Andy Barsinger notes Mrs. Hofmann's enthusiasm. He says that Mrs. Hofmann notices and praises everything her students do. Assistant Principal Joanne Ferguson adds, "You can feel her love for the students the instant you walk into her room. She loves the children, and they return her love."

Mrs. Hofmann, who has taught at several elementary schools in Howard County, lives in Clarksville with her husband, Lee, and daughter Megan.

The halls at Glenwood Middle School are festooned with fliers inviting students, parents and friends to see "the basketball game of the year." It's a game featuring the "Glenwood Super Teacher Team" as they take on the "Mount View Marshmallow Teacher Team" at Glenwood.

Some say this will be just a friendly rivalry, but the Glenwood and Mount View teachers have been practicing hard.

Mount View staff member Tony Holland responds, "We're not marshmallows. We're going out on the court to show Glenwood that the Mount View team is the toughest."

This is going to be a fun evening, with the Glenwood Jazz Ensemble adding some hot music to the mix. Proceeds from the $1 admission charge and the sale of refreshments will benefit the Glenwood students' Christmas in April fund.

Introductions for the big game begin at 7:15 p.m. and tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.

Call 313-5520.

Good luck to the music students from Western Howard County who will fill Mount Hebron High School with wonderful sounds Saturday.

For months, hundreds of instrumental music students, 29 from Glenwood Middle School alone, have rehearsed solos and ensembles for the annual Howard County Solo and Ensemble Festival.

Saturday, they will play scales and their carefully prepared pieces for a judge. Every 12 minutes in each room of the school, judges will assess the performance of another student or small group. Music teachers will spend the day rushing from room to room to offer encouragement. Musicians will leave with a certificate, a sheet of their judge's comments, and a feeling of a job well done.
