Holthaus closing in on 4-minute mile

An attack on the four-minute mile is next for James Madison senior Matt Holthaus.

Holthaus (Wilde Lake) broke another school record when he won the 1,000-meter race at the Patriot Games at George Mason, lowering his own mark five seconds to two minutes, 20.38 seconds. The previous week he trimmed his James Madison mile record from 4:06.60 to 4:01.22.

Basketball

Two of Pfeiffer's key players are from Baltimore. Marlon Quillens (Southwestern) leads 13-4 Pfeiffer in assists (63) and is second in steals (30) and scoring (14.6 ppg). George Raikes (Mervo) is second in rebounds (7.4) and fourth in scoring (11.4).

* Bucknell freshman Kristen Lloyd (Mount Hebron) established career highs with 11 points and six rebounds in 15 minutes against Lafayette, then followed with 10 and four against Holy Cross.

* Rich Rhinehart (Towson Catholic) led Shippensburg with 18 points and nine rebounds in a loss to Clarion.

* Dennis Edwards (Annapolis), No. 2 in scoring (28.3) in NCAA Division II, needs five points to become No. 5 on Fort Hays State's career list. The senior has 1,287.

* Senior Todd Kerr (Park) is on the verge of becoming the 27th Hampden-Sydney player to score 1,000 career points.

* Freshman forward Christina Williamson (Mercy) is averaging 1.9 points and 1.8 rebounds coming off the bench for Susquehanna.

* Matt Seward (Loyola) scored 19, 11 and 17 points as Mary Washington swept three Capital Athletic Conference games.

Baseball

Rob McCandless (Severna Park) is back at third base for Radford after missing last season due to knee surgery. As a freshman, he started 28 games and batted .343.

* Shortstop Donny Burks (Perry Hall) is one of four seniors on the James Madison team that is No. 21 in the NCAA Division I preseason rankings. Burks hit .331 last year as JMU went 40-19-1. Mike Mattix (Elkton) is back for his sophomore season after batting .340 as a reserve outfielder.

* Outfielder Josh Itzoe, a 40th-round Orioles draft pick after his senior year at Calvert Hall, is plunging into Wake Forest's season after batting .273 in 27 games as a freshman. Another Calvert Hall grad, redshirt freshman Larry Marino, provides infield depth.

Lacrosse

Washington & Lee's roster is peppered with Baltimore area players: Duncan Slidell and Bryan Depew (Severn), Michael Alessi (Gilman), Noah Egorin (Franklin), Shaun McKenzie (Loyola), Russell Croft and David Thompson (St. Paul's), Scott Mackley and Pete Tapley (John Carroll), Scott McKelvey (Old Mill) and Pete Rowan (St. Mary's).

Et cetera

Bucknell swimming co-captain Stew Harris (John Carroll) remained unbeaten in the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyles after season-best performances against Colgate. . . . Cecelia Youngblood (Dulaney) is a senior on the top-ranked Penn State fencing team, which is 9-1.
