It may be only mid-February but organizers of the fifth annual Westminster Flower and Jazz Festival, which is scheduled May 13, already have started working.
Westminster recreation officials are hoping that planning in the winter will secure some great performance talent for the spring event.
"Our entertainment committee is presently looking for jazz entertainers, whether they be a single person, group, vocal or nonvocal," said Kristen Walters, the city's recreation program coordinator. "We are also looking for a variety of experience levels -- people who want to get their first shot, and those with experience."
Entertainers will perform one- to two-hour sets to fill the six-hour event.
TC Ms. Walters said the committee also is seeking a variety of roving entertainers, including clowns and jugglers.
Times and fees are negotiable, and a stage and minimal sound system will be provided.
Anyone interested in performing should write to: Kristen Walters, P.O. Box 710, Westminster, Md. 21158 for an information packet, or call 848-9161 or 876-1313.

Carroll Hospice, a nonprofit, private organization, is seeking volunteers to help with its outreach effort for terminally ill patients.
"We are looking for people to help with clerical work, fund-raising activities, and I emphasize fun when I talk about fund-raising," said Kathy Bare, director of volunteer services.
"People get to meet others and have a good time. We are also looking for people to provide transportation for patients, as well as delivering equipment and supplies," she said.
Ms. Bare said Carroll Hospice is accepting names of adults interested in being buddies of children who will be attending a bereavement camp June 24 to June 25.
Professionals such as massage therapists, cosmetologists, and music and art therapists also are needed for hospice patients.
In addition, Carroll Hospice needs various maintenance support for the hospice office and patient homes.
"Our need for volunteers is increasing all the time. Part of the reason we continually ask for volunteers is that our current volunteers need to take some time to grieve for their patients and their own personal losses," Ms. Bare said.
"Also, the outreach of our services are expanding, and we hope to be doing more nursing homes and retirement homes in the future," she said.
A free, 14-week volunteer training program is scheduled to begin March 6 at the hospice office at 95 Carroll St. in Westminster.
