A Severn man was arrested yesterday and charged with assault with intent to murder after a woman reported he attacked her with a butcher knife, police said.

McKinley Lee Moyer, 39, of the 1800 block of Arwell Court is being held in the Anne Arundel County Detention Center on $35,000 bond, the court commissioner's office said.

Anne Arundel County police said the woman, who lives on the same street as Mr. McKinley, reported that Mr. McKinley became violent after she asked him to leave her house. Police said Mr. McKinley threatened the woman with an 8-inch knife and then pushed her onto a sofa.

The woman told police she attempted to ward off Mr. McKinley, but he slashed her with the knife. Police said the woman received a half-inch cut on her left thigh. She declined to be taken to a hospital for treatment, police said.

Mr. McKinley, who also was charged with assault with intent to disable and battery, was arrested at his house, police said.

Stretch of Route 174 to be closed to traffic

A short section of Route 174 will be closed near the end of the week for utility and road work, Fort Meade officials said.

The stretch of road near Meade Heights Elementary School will be closed for about a month while crews upgrade services for new houses to be built in Meade Heights.

Fort Meade officials say the work will begin on or about Friday, and traffic will be rerouted from Reece Road to Forrest Avenue and Patton Drive.
