Award-winning Emerson Quartet plays Saturday

The Emerson String Quartet, three-time Grammy Award VTC winners, will be presented in concert at 8 p.m. Saturday in Smith Theatre at Howard Community College in Columbia. The concert is part of the Candlelight Concert series.

The quartet has been acclaimed for its musicianship around the world and has appeared in virtually every important series and festival. It approaches both the classics and contemporary music with equal mastery, delivering performances of assured conviction and enthusiasm.

General admission is $20, $14 for seniors and $8 for full-time students. For tickets and information, call (410) 715-0034. In the current show "Beauty Is Strangely Familiar" at Resurgam, Catherine Jones' paintings are "based on winter trips to her childhood home in upstate New York," reads a statement from the gallery. But based on Jones' earlier work that I've seen and the painting reproduced here, Jones' works are not simply pictures of a place but strong, emotion-laden paintings in which figures appear alone and threatened by their surroundings. In this show, Jones is joined by Carol Fastuca, whose artist's books address the issue of modern romance, and by Kim Hildebrand, a jeweler whose works reflect episodes or encounters in the artist's life. Through Feb. 25 at Resurgam, 910 S. Charles St. For information, call (410) 962-0513. The Vagabond Players, 806 S. Broadway, will present the Baltimore premiere of "Joined at the Head" for five weekends beginning Friday. Written by Catherine Butterfield, the play focuses on a New York writer who becomes involved in the lives of her former high school beau and his terminally ill wife.

The Vagabonds cast includes Jim Hild, Katherine Lyons, Anne Mulligan and Rebecca Joseph, under the direction of Lance Lewman. Show times are 8:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sundays, through March 19. Tickets are $9 and $10. For more information, call (410) 563-9135.
