Seniors Kit Doran of Aberdeen and Paul Konschak of North Harford extended unbeaten streaks, and Doran was one of five champions that helped the Eagles capture an 11th successive team title in the 26th annual Harford County wrestling championships at North Harford High School last night.
On a program that produced some upsets, as well as matches that were closer then final scores, Doran (26-0) stopped Jaysson Eicholtz of North Harford, 9-3.
Aberdeen finished with 194 points to 140 for runner-up North Harford. Fallston was third at 126.5.
Doran was joined in the championship group by junior Kevin Carter (103), and seniors Corey Pascuzzi (119), Wayne Cook (125) and Eric Morgan (heavyweight).
Seven of the eight past champions, six from a year ago, and C. Milton Wright's David Schmidt from two years ago, came through unscathed, although Joppatowne's Travis Volmar and Konschak had to scramble to make it.
Volmar, a senior who won at 130 last year, and was seeded third at 145 this time, got a reversal and two back points in the last
minute to overtake 1994 regional champ Patrick Elliott of Fallston, 7-6.
Defender Konschak (22-0) was nearly pinned by Wright's Brian Walter in the second period of their 171 match, and possibly was saved by the period ending. He then pulled away from a tie at 8 in the third period for a 14-9 decision.
North Harford teammate Tom Staab also defended, beating Chad Bettac of Wright, 9-1.
Bel Air had two champions, Matt Birth (21-2), the third brother in the family to claim a county title, at 130, and defender Bryan Stewart (24-1) at 140.
DeWayne Whitley of Aberdeen, was the lone unsuccessful defender, as Rob Mister of Edgewood, down 4-0, got a pin at 4:42.
Pascuzzi, who had gained a forfeit win over North Harford's Mike Liptrap 10 days ago when Liptrap incurred a strained back muscle, earned a 4-0 victory over his close friend, getting a first-period takedown and controlling the match thereafter.
Liptrap, in pain, said there was no question that he would go in the final.
"Coach [Fred Holtz] talked about not going out for the final, but I wanted to do it," Liptrap said. "He said he'd stop it if there looked to be a problem."
