Marriner Marketing buys Old City Group

Marriner Marketing Communications Inc. of Columbia has acquired Old City Group Inc. of Greenbelt.

Marriner will maintain its Columbia offices and use Old City Group's offices to serve clients in Washington and Virginia.

Marriner Marketing, which has 25 employees, has regional and national clients, including food service, financial and health care organizations.

Old City Group's clients include the National Postal Museum, Red Hot & Blue Restaurants, Moto Photo and the World Cup '94.

GBMC board elects Civiletti as chairman

The Greater Baltimore Medical Center board of trustees has elected Benjamin R. Civiletti chairman of its restructured board.

Mr. Civiletti, attorney general in the Carter administration, was formerly chairman of Maryland Health Corp Inc., the parent of GBMC. He is chairman of the Baltimore law firm Venable, Baetjer and Howard.

GBMC's new board combines the formerly separate boards of the parent company and hospital to "reflect an integrated health system bringing together all of our services," said Vivienne Stearns-Elliott, director of communications and media relations.

Nancy Brennan, executive director of Baltimore City Life Museums, and Carl J. Schramm, executive vice president of Fortis Inc., an insurance and financial service company, also joined the board.

Regional ad agency group names Gray

Roger Gray, president and CEO of Gray Kirk/VanSant, has been named vice chairman of the Mid-Atlantic Council for the American Association of Advertising Agencies.

Mr. Gray has been the president of the Baltimore advertising agency for six years and is currently partner in charge of accounts such as Choice Hotels International, Martin Marietta, GEnie Information Services and Loyola College.

He has served on the council of the American Association of Advertising Agencies and as president of the Advertising Association of Baltimore.

Carstar enters state with three franchises

Carstar Automotive Inc. has expanded into Maryland, converting three auto-repair body shops into franchises.

The new franchises are Jeff Shaw's Collision Craft Carstar in Baltimore; Mullinix ACC Carstar in Ellicott City; and Bill Denny's Carstar Body Repair in Havre de Grace.

Carstar, founded in 1989 with headquarters in Overland Park, Kan., has 350 franchises in 34 states.

Shanholtz CPAs opens Ellicott City office

Shanholtz Professional Corp., a certified public accounting firm, has opened a second office at 3525-A Ellicott Mills Drive in Ellicott City.

The new office will serve clients south of Baltimore City.

The firm, with its main office in Baltimore, specializes in business valuation, litigation support, accounting, consulting and tax services for businesses and individuals.

Anne Markstein opens interior design service

Anne Markstein, former owner of Expressions Custom Furniture stores in Columbia and Baltimore, has opened Anne Markstein Interiors on Main Street, Ellicott City.

Working in conjunction with custom furniture designer Dennis Falcetti, Ms. Markstein will offer a range of interior design services.

"Room Service," an on-location consultation for a single room, will be offered for $195 for a half-day.

Yudkowsky is named to editorial board

Chaim Yudkowsky, manager of the management consulting services division at Grabush, Newman & Co., has been named to the editorial advisory board of the Journal of Accountancy.

The journal is a monthly publication dealing with tax issues, financial reporting and other accounting issues.

Mr. Yudkowsky also was recently appointed to the board of the Edward A. Myerberg Northwest Senior Center, a joint project of the state, the Baltimore City Commission on Aging and Retirement Education, Jewish Family Services and the National Council of Jewish Women.

Grabush, Newman & Co., a certified public accounting and management consulting firm based in Baltimore, was established in 1968 and employs 50 people.

Md. CPAs offer guide to tax preparation

The Maryland Association of CPAs is offering a tax preparation guide to help residents minimize their tax burden, organize financial records, choose a filing status and be aware of eligible deductions, adjustments and exemptions when preparing a tax return.

Epic mounts campaign with Brennan agency

Brennan Advertising of Hunt Valley has been selected to create a consumer awareness campaign for Epic Pharmacies, a Baltimore-based chain of 265 independently owned pharmacies in the mid-Atlantic region.

The campaign will attempt to educate consumers about Epic, which is similar to the Ace Hardware network in that locally owned stores are affiliated with a larger chain but still maintain their own names and identities.
