Age: 18

Anika, a senior, has a 3.5 grade-point average and is in the top 20 percent of her class. She has taken gifted and talented courses in algebra, American government, chemistry, physics and world history.

She also has taken honors courses in biology, English, geometry, earth sciences, French and U.S. history.

As a student at Wilde Lake, she participated in the Maryland Student Science Seminar at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, a seminar that looks at careers for women in math and science. She played varsity volleyball and basketball.

As a sophomore, Anika lettered in varsity volleyball and was co-captain of the varsity basketball team. She was statistician for the varsity softball team.

In her junior year, she lettered again in volleyball and was co-captain of the basketball team. She also became manager of the softball team.

As a senior, she was awarded most valuable player in volleyball and co-captain of the basketball team.

Out-of-school activities included volunteering for camp staff with the Department of Recreation and Parks from June to August her freshman and sophomore years. As a junior, she was a volunteer camp counselor and tutor with the Helping Hands Enrichment and Leadership Foundation, an enrichment program geared to tutoring students in various subjects.

Anika has gathered awards for her academic and sports prowess. She was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students as a sophomore and junior and won honorable mention on the all-academic team for volleyball in her sophomore, junior and senior years. She also was named to the all-academic team for basketball her junior year.

Anika is a member of the National Honor Society.

She has worked for Segall-Majestic Photography as a prom clerk and as a camp counselor for the Columbia Athletic Club.

Anika is a member of the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Baltimore and has been involved in the Bethel Educational Incentive Program Church Youth Group since sixth grade.

This program teaches students in grades six through 12 oral and written communication skills.

Anika's parents are Henry and Barbara Middleton. Her brother is Monte, 22.

Plans: She plans to attend college and is looking at Wake Forest University. She would like to major in accounting or computer science. "I like math -- it's my favorite subject."

Her comments: "I have always liked sports. It's a way for me to stay busy and keep in shape. I am in the National Honor Society and have always worked with kids and I enjoy working in my church youth group. A lot of things I do are an extension of each other."
