Industrial engineer

Gustave L. Oppermann, a retired industrial engineer, died Jan. 28 of cancer at Howard County Hospital. He was 80.

He retired in the 1980s from Westinghouse's Advanced Study Group, where he had worked for 20 years. He also operated Oppermann Associates, a consulting firm.

He was born in New York City and earned a bachelor's degree from Syracuse University in 1936. He had lived in Columbia since A memorial service was to be held at 2 p.m. today at Oakland Manor, 5430 Vantage Point Road, Columbia.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, the former Fay Agard; three sons, Terry Oppermann of Honolulu, Bradley Oppermann of Boston and Jeffrey Oppermann of Newark, N.Y.; two daughters, Sharon Spence of Atlanta and Bonnie Oppermann of Honolulu; two foster children, Fred Taylor of Columbia and Wendy Everett of San Francisco; a brother, Charles Oppermann of Boulder, Colo; a sister, Margaret Majestic of Citrus Heights, Calif.; and two grandsons.

Janet L. P. Tutchton

Dental hygienist

Janet Lynn Poehlman Tutchton, a dental hygienist, died Jan. 28 of cancer at her home in Maitland, Fla. The former Towson resident was 44.

She moved to Florida in 1983, after she married David W. Tutchton Sr. A 1968 graduate of Towson High School and a 1972 graduate of the University of Maryland, she began her career working for a Joppatowne dentist.

DTC A memorial service is scheduled at 4 p.m. today at Central Presbyterian Church, 7308 York Road, where she was a member since childhood.

In addition to her husband, her survivors are two sons, Robert Renew of Parkville and James Renew of Maitland; two stepsons, Steve Tutchton of Maitland and David W. Tutchton of Winter Springs, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Denise Lowman of Forest Hill; a brother, the Rev. Thomas Poehlman of Chester; a sister, Carol Poehlman Palante of Timonium; her parents, Scott and Ruth Poehlman of Towson; and six grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Central Presbyterian Church.

Barry Tannenbaum

Retired claims examiner

Barry Tannenbaum, a retired Social Security Administration claims examiner who was a former teacher and Maryland National Guard officer, died Friday of complications from kidney surgery at Northwest Hospital Center. He was 66.

The Baltimore native was a 1951 graduate of what is now Towson State University. He taught math at Southern High School and Garrison Junior High School in the 1950s. He served as a captain in the Guard's 29th infantry division.

He lived in Randallstown for 36 years and volunteered at Liberty Resource Center, where he distributed food and helped senior citizens and the disabled. His hobbies included collecting N-gauge model trains, making miniature furniture for dollhouses and gardening.

He was active in conservationist groups and a member of St. John's Lodge in Baltimore. He was a Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Woodlawn Chapter 101, and had been treasurer and membership chairman of Chapter 1936 of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, the former Phyllis Sandler; two daughters, Sharon Tannenbaum of Woodlawn and Terry Chessler of Reisterstown; and two grandchildren.

Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. today at Sol Levinson & Bros., 6010 Reisterstown Road.
