A couple of free throws in the final second.
Gettysburg's 72-70 win over Dickinson on Wednesday is a primary example of just how tight the men's basketball race is for the final playoff spot in the Centennial Conference East.
The women's race is even closer, with three teams at 8-2 going into last night's action. Only two will advance.
It's crunch time and both Western Maryland teams remain in the middle of things.
On the men's side, the Gettysburg win combined with the Green Terror's 87-78 loss to unbeaten Franklin & Marshall put both at 5-5 in conference play.
After last night's conference game at Washington, the Green Terror has a road game Saturday at Johns Hopkins left on its conference slate before a home showdown with Gettysburg in both teams' regular-season finale on Feb. 18.
The Green Terror has three players shooting over 80 percent at the free-throw line. Freshman Kris Shuck (92 percent), Will Marshall (85) and Jeff Daniels (83) are second, sixth and eighth, respectively, in the conference.
As a team, the Green Terror is second at the line at .752. Swarthmore leads the CC at .756.
Women's basketball
Sandi DeJager has led the Green Terror in scoring the past five games going into last night's game. Tuesday at F & M, she scored 16 to lead the Green Terror to a 70-44 win and has averaged nearly 17 points.
The Green Terror got some help from Dickinson when it knocked off Gettysburg, 74-72, on Tuesday. Gettysburg, Hopkins and Western Maryland were tied at 8-2 in the conference with Dickinson sneaking back into the picture at 7-4.
The Green Terror will play host to Hopkins Saturday.

With basketball and wrestling postponed on Saturday because of the snowfall, the Western Maryland swim team found an interesting way to hook up with Ursinus to get its meet in -- by phone.
The meet originally was scheduled to take place at Ursinus, but with the storm on its way, the two teams agreed on swimming at their own pools. Officials were at both sites to confirm the times and the results were relayed by phone.
The Western Maryland men came away with a 112-53 win, while the Ursinus women got the split with a 108.5-82.4 decision over the Green Terror.
The Green Terror closed out its dual-meet schedule on Wednesday, dropping two at Gettysburg.
The men (5-6) dropped a 127-60 decision, with the women (8-4) falling, 134-58.
Paul Matkovic (200-yard backstroke) and Peter Fuller (400 individual medley) were individual winners for the men with Buffy Burke (100 freestyle) and Karen Alexander (200 backstroke) coming away winners for the women.
Gettysburg's men and women are defending Centennial Conference champions. The Centennial Conference championships will take place Feb. 17-19 at Swarthmore.
Indoor track
Two more school track records were set last weekend.
Kent Lightbourn ran the 400-meter -- in 50.71 seconds in the Hardee's Classic at West Virginia University on Saturday.
Sunday at Dickinson, Toni Smith's time of 21:36.1 in the 5,000 set a women's standard and freshman Kelly Parrish set her second school mark in three weeks with a time of 5:07.2 in the 1,500. On Jan. 20 at Haverford, she ran the 800 in 2:27.5.
