Seat-belt tickets, bus safety on agendas
House and Senate committees will take up several road safety measures this afternoon. Among them are measures to bolster enforcement of the state's seat belt law and set stricter safety standards for school buses.
The Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee will hear proposals at 1 p.m. that would allow police to stop motorists who are not wearing seat belts. Motorists now can be ticketed for seat belt violations only if first stopped for other infractions.
The Senate panel also will consider a proposal that would make it a crime to operate a school bus unless every student has a seat.
