On the verge of being upset by 20th-ranked Centennial, 12th-ranked Mount Hebron (12-5, 7-2) relied on point guard Alisha Mosley down the stretch.
The 5-foot-6 junior scored 12 of her 22 points in the game's final two minutes, including the game-winning lay-up at the buzzer to give Mount Hebron a 55-54 victory.
"I didn't expect to be given a clear opportunity to drive the length of the court after we called timeout, but it was there and I took it," said Mosley.
Centennial coach Dave Greenberg, who a year ago was tutoring Mosley's point guard skills as the Vikings head coach, took part of the blame for the last-minute defensive lapses and play calling of the Eagles (8-9, 4-5).
"The difference the other night, when we lost to Hammond, is that we, the coaches and players, really kept our poise against Hammond," Greenberg said. "Tonight we didn't stay poised and we played like we were just trying to hold on."
Centennial, twice building double-digit leads in the second half, seemingly had locked up the game midway through the fourth quarter. Centennial senior forward Kish Jordan (16 rebounds) led the Eagles on a 14-1 run for a 47-35 lead with four minutes left.
Jordan, who scored 15 of her 35 points in the fourth quarter, could not be stopped down low, despite being double- and triple-teamed.
Jordan, however, did not score in the game's final 1:51. Mosley, on the other hand, took the basketball baseline to baseline for two quick baskets and four straight free throws to pull the Vikings to within 54-53 with 10 seconds left.
After a timeout, Mount Hebron sent Regina Dinisio (six assists) to the foul line with seven seconds left. Dinisio missed the front end of the one-and-one and Moseley grabbed the rebound. With a clear drive up the right sideline, Mosley heeded her coach's advice instead and called a timeout.
