Billy Wells had 24 points and nine assists as No. 2 Dunbar defeated host Northern, 105-67, yesterday to give Dunbar coach Paul Smith his 300th career win in basketball.
Marvis Thornton added 20 for the Poets (17-1), who led at the half, 50-28, and opened a 78-46 lead after three quarters. Robert Foster had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Tommy Polley had 16 points.
Smith, who now has a career record of 300-162, is one of six active area coaches with 300 or more wins. In addition to the last two seasons at Dunbar, Smith spent 16 seasons at McDonogh and two at Sidwell Friends (D.C.).
