An Anne Arundel County grand jury yesterday indicted a 32-year-old Severn woman on charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the Jan. 15 stabbing death of her husband.

Authorities say Merle Denise Thomas of the 1800 block of Arwell Court stabbed Steven Thomas, 32, about 6:15 p.m. after an argument that began when he accused her of cheating on him.

As Mrs. Thomas tried to leave the house, Mr. Thomas started choking her, authorities said. She pulled away and went to the kitchen, where he pushed her against the sink, and she grabbed a knife and stabbed him in the chest, authorities said.

Paramedics took Mr. Thomas to Kimbrough Army Hospital at Fort Meade, where he died a short time later, police said.

Mrs. Thomas is free on $2,500 bail.

5 youths charged in beating at school

A 12-year-old Odenton boy was jumped and beaten by five other youths Friday morning on the grounds of the Arundel Middle School in the 1100 block of Hammond Lane, according to authorities.

The boys, ranging in age from 11 to 13, knocked the 12-year-old to the ground about 9 a.m. and punched and kicked him repeatedly, county police said yesterday. They were charged as juveniles with assault and battery and released to their parents, police said.

The victim told police he was attacked from behind. He was treated by his family doctor for his injuries.
