TONIGHT'S GAMES

THE BALTIMORE SUN

No. 1 NORTH CAROLINA (18-1) at No. 8 MARYLAND (17-4)

Site: Cole Field House, College Park

Time: 9

TV/Radio: Channels 54, 7/WBAL (1090 AM)

Outlook: The Terrapins will be looking to regroup after Saturday's 100-91 loss at Georgia Tech. A team that leads the ACC is three offensive categories -- scoring, scoring margin and field-goal percentage -- will look to improve its defense. The Tar Heels lead the ACC in one category -- three-point shooting -- behind senior Danta Calabria (39 of 68) and Donald Williams (45 of 112). Sophomore All-American Joe Smith (19.7 ppg, 9.8 rpg) was in foul trouble against the Tar Heels last month and fouled out of the game against the Yellow Jackets. Smith will need support from Keith Booth (12.3 ppg, 6.9 rpg) to keep fellow sophomores Rasheed Wallace (18.2 ppg, 8.7 rpg) and Jerry Stackhouse (20.6 ppg, 8.2 rpg) from dominating inside. Another key matchup will be in the backcourt, where Johnny Rhodes (14 ppg, 5.1 rpg) kept the Terps in the game with a team-high 21 in Chapel Hill but hasn't been looking at the basket lately (one game in double figures in the past five), and Duane Simpkins (10.7 ppg, 5.1 apg) is coming off a career-high 24-point performance against Georgia Tech. Williams (15.2 ppg) and sophomore point G Jeff McInnis (12.9 ppg, 6.4 apg) combined for 32 points and 11 assists against the Terps last month.

MARYLAND WOMEN (10-11) at No. 21 DUKE (16-4)

Site: Cameron Indoor Stadium, Durham, N.C.

Time: 7

Outlook: The Terrapins are coming off a 67-59 loss to Georgia Tech on Sunday. Maryland has lost two straight, four of its past five and eight of its past 11. Top reserve Stephanie Cross is the only Terp averaging in double figures in scoring (10.9). The Blue Devils have lost two straight. Duke is led by junior C Alison Day (16.3 ppg, 7.2 rpg), senior F Carey Kauffman (16.0 ppg, 9.2 rpg) and junior G Jen Scanlon (13.6 ppg). Maryland, which leads the series 27-7, lost to the Blue Devils, 80-62, last month at Cole Field House.
